Progressive Home Insurance Review 2024

Progressive Home Insurance Review 2024

Progressive Policy Coverage

Most homeowners insurance companies, including Progressive’s partners, offer a set of basic coverages through their standard policies:

  • Dwelling: Homeowners insurance can repair or replace your home if it is damaged or destroyed in a covered incident, such as fire, burglary or a windstorm.
  • Other structures: Dwelling coverage can also be purchased for additional structures on your property, such as detached garages, sheds or swimming pools.
  • Personal possessions: This portion of your policy pays to replace your belongings, including your jewelry, clothes and furniture. You can also buy additional coverage for expensive items.
  • Liability: If you or family members living in your home are liable for property damage or injury, your policy can offset legal and medical fees.
  • Medical payments: If someone suffers an injury at your home, your policy can also help cover medical expenses.
  • Additional living expenses (ALE): Also called loss-of-use coverage, ALE coverage foots the bill for your hotel stay, dining and other expenses while your home is being worked on after a covered peril.

Additional coverage

You can customize your home insurance policy by adding endorsements that enhance your coverage.

Because Progressive partners with several providers, and each company has unique endorsement offerings, availability can vary. However, Progressive states explicitly you can add the coverages below to your policy:

  • Water backup: This optional coverage pays for water removal and replacement of belongings damaged by water due to a sump pump or plumbing backup.
  • Personal injury: This endorsement provides additional coverage for costly personal injury cases, such as slander and personal libel lawsuits, wrongful evictions and false arrests.

While flood coverage is excluded from standard home insurance plans, you can compare quotes and purchase a separate flood insurance policy with Progressive. This type of coverage can be helpful if you live in a coastal area and may be required by your mortgage lender if you live in a flood zone, as dictated by FEMA.

Progressive Cost

According to a 2021 report from the Insurance Information Institute, the national average cost of a homeowners insurance policy is $1,249 per year as of 2018. However, multiple indicators will determine what you pay for coverage.

Because Progressive’s rates can vary dramatically depending on your location and other details, it’s crucial to get a customized quote based on your home’s details.

In general, home insurance rates are most heavily affected by some of the factors below:

  • Location: Where you live affects your premiums, primarily because construction costs vary in different parts of the country. Insurance underwriters, the individuals who determine your rates, will also consider your area’s weather-related perils, crime rates and your home’s proximity to a fire hydrant, fire department and police station.
  • Replacement cost: Home insurance rates are based largely on the cost of rebuilding your home using materials that are comparable to the original ones used. To establish replacement cost, Progressive will ask questions about your home’s square footage, roof, age, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and architectural style, taking local building costs into consideration.
  • Age and condition: To determine the replacement cost, your insurer will also consider your home’s age and condition. Plumbing, electrical systems and construction materials have changed, so older homes can be more challenging to replace.
  • Roof: One of the main elements the insurance company will be concerned with is your roof because damaged roofs can lead to extensive and costly destruction. During the quoting process, you may be asked about the age of your roof and the materials it was built with. Some companies offer discounts for home insurance shoppers with fire or impact-resistant roofing materials or recently replaced roofs.
  • Credit score: Like lenders and credit card companies, insurance providers use your credit history to determine risk. If you have a low credit score (580 or below), you might pay more for homeowners insurance than an individual with a higher credit score. Homeowners with good credit scores are considered less likely to file a claim in the future.
  • Claims history: Your home insurance provider will also ask if you’ve filed a claim in the last few years. Individuals who have filed recent claims may be subject to higher home insurance rates. The reverse is also true, and applicants who haven’t filed any recent claims may be eligible for claims-free discounts and deductible credits.
  • Security features: Anything you do to reduce the risk of having to file a claim could potentially earn you lower rates. Most companies offer safe-home discounts for installing safety and security features, such as deadbolts, a home security system, fire alarm or sprinklers. Burglar and fire alarms that report to local authorities when triggered can unlock even more savings.
  • Renovations: While painting your bedroom may not change your home’s value much, finishing a basement or installing new upgraded kitchen cabinets can. Any time you execute a renovation or remodel that could change your home’s replacement cost, it’s wise to let your insurer know. These types of changes can alter your coverage needs and impact your premiums.
  • Policy structure: The level of dwelling, loss of use, personal property and personal liability coverage you choose will also affect your rates, as will your deductible level and any endorsements you choose to add to your policy. Adding supplementary coverage for fine jewelry or tacking on an endorsement for sump pump overflow protection, for example, can increase rates.
  • Pool/trampoline: When you apply for a quote, you may be asked if you have a swimming pool or trampoline. Both of these items can lead to increased liability risks related to injuries on your property. If you have either of these items, you can expect them to factor into your home insurance rates.
  • Dog breed: Your dog’s breed is another liability issue that can arise when applying for coverage. Dogs that are statistically more likely to bite people or cause serious injuries can be more expensive to insure. Check with your insurer to see which dogs can impact coverage costs. Your pet could also be excluded from your policy’s protection

Progressive Discounts

While you may be eligible for additional insurance discounts from Progressive depending on which insurance carrier you choose, Progressive highlights the discounts below:

  • Home and auto: Like most providers, Progressive sells multiple insurance products and will reward you for bundling your Progressive homeowners or renters insurance policy with Progressive auto insuranceThe company claims you can save 5% applied to your car insurance policy. You can also bundle your home insurance with motorcycle or RV, unique from other providers.
  • Safety and alarm: When you protect your home with security and safety features, such as burglar and fire alarms, security cameras and security systems, Progressive applies discounts to your premiums.
  • Quote in advance: Applicants who obtain a quote from Progressive 10 days or more before their policy starts can earn a special discount for shopping ahead.
  • New purchase: You can get insurance discounts from Progressive and its partners when you purchase a new home or change from a renters insurance policy to homeowners coverage. Your home does not have to be newly built for you to earn this discount.
  • New home construction: If your home is newly constructed, you could save even more. The newer a home is, the higher the discount Progressive may give you.
  • Paying in full: Progressive offers an additional discount when you choose to pay your annual premium in full rather than choosing 12 monthly installments.
  • Paperless: You can secure an additional discount when you opt to receive policy documents by email rather than receiving them by mail.

The best way to determine what discounts you’re eligible for is to apply for quotes.

Progressive Insurance Customer Reviews

We examined more than 100 Progressive home insurance reviews from policyholders during our analysis to gauge the overall customer experience. We found that most of Progressive’s negative reviews are centered around its auto insurance policies rather than homeowners insurance.

However, some common homeowners’ complaints are focused on the company’s cost increases, lower coverage limits and lack of policy information online. Many positive reviews emphasized Progressive’s quick response to customer service issues and claims and its affordable rates. Progressive did not provide a comment when we reached out about the negative reviews.

Here’s what a few customers have to say about their experience with Progressive on ConsumerAffairs:

“They were extremely helpful. They gave me prices of competitors, even ones that were lower prices! The gentleman who helped me was extremely friendly. He told me what all my options were. Once I found a policy I wanted to pay for a year upfront and he walked me through the process and carefully explained how to fill out the online forms. I definitely recommend them!” —Mary, Modesto, California

“I like that the policy is broad. It covers damages to the entire property, inside and outside, especially water. Since I live in Florida, a hurricane zone this gives me comfort. The way to file a claim is simple. There is no need to call and deal with a representative with endless questions. It can be done on a website making it easy. The company is one that I have used before and that I was satisfied with. So I have no doubt that I will continue to be pleased.”  —Arlene, Port Orange, Florida

“Progressive has reasonable rates, good service, quick enrollment, very little red tape. They provide decent coverage on the home but high deductible. The policy was ample for my needs at the time but I prefer more coverage when I can afford it. Coverage limits not very high and they do not pay claims as readily as Allstate, AAA and some other insurers. Nevertheless, they have the lowest rates of companies I sought quote from.” —Chris, El Cajon, California

“Progressive was the cheapest option for the coverage that we needed and was recommended by the agent that we have been using for several years. We also liked that there is a local office. But I think homeowners is relatively expensive and I don’t feel like the coverage is sufficient in some cases. I also don’t think the policies explicitly state what is or is not covered.” —Jessica, Fulton, New York

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking to save money by bundling your home and auto insurance, Progressive could be a solid choice of insurer. With rewarding discounts, a solid brand reputation and competitive rates, it’s a company worth considering.

However, it isn’t our highest-rated home insurance provider. If you’re looking to purchase coverage directly from an insurer that underwrites its policies, we recommend Lemonade for a streamlined online experience and Allstate for its extensive endorsements. We recommend comparing quotes from multiple companies before purchasing homeowners insurance.

Methodology: Our system for ranking the best home insurance companies

Our team surveyed dozens of home insurance providers and created a scoring system to judge each company’s quality and service. We reach out for sample quotes, both over the phone and on the internet, to simulate an authentic customer experience. Here are the factors that account for our provider reviews:

  • Coverage (20%): We analyze each provider’s coverage options, policy endorsements and coverage limits to determine quality of coverage.
  • Customer service (15%): We also evaluate each company’s customer service options such as live chat, a customer support phone line and access to agents.
  • Technology (15%): Similarly, we score providers based on their digital resources, such as a mobile app, online comparison tools and quote process.
  • Reputation (15%): We gauge reputation by evaluating consumer reviews and third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings.
  • Additional benefits (15%): Additionally, we weighed each company’s added benefits, including discounts and policy endorsements.
  • Cost (20%): Last, we compare cost data for homes across the nation to assess how competitively priced each provider is.

Companies with the best customer service exhibit 24/7 availability, educational resources on their website, useful digital tools and a seamless claims-filing process. Providers that offer extensive discount options, endorsements, customizable coverage options and unique features score significantly higher than those that don’t, putting them toward the top of our recommendations to readers.
